After a thread lift, Beauty Story usually asks you to put off five things for a while: anything that makes you open your mouth wide, including a booked dental appointment, big yawns and hard food; firm facial massage; sleeping face down; saunas and steam rooms; and alcohol. How long you postpone them depends on the treatment you had and how you are healing, so the period that counts is the one your doctor gives you on the day of treatment. Two situations override the list. Urgent dental pain should not wait. And pain or swelling that keeps getting worse, or a fever, needs a medical facility near you, not a message to the clinic and a wait for the reply.
The list tends to collide with ordinary life in the week you get home. The appointments you moved to make the trip are waiting: the dentist, the massage place you go to, a dinner with friends. This article goes through each item and why it is there, the exception for dental pain, what you may notice while the face settles, everyday care, and how to stay in touch from abroad. For the wider question of what "downtime" means, see What Downtime Actually Means.
Why a thread lift comes with a list
A thread lift places medical threads beneath the skin to support selected soft tissues. At Beauty Story the threads are absorbable, and the plan, including the thread material, where the threads sit and the direction of support, is set around the anatomy of your face. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) describes the procedure as one that can mechanically lift tissue where the threads are placed and also stimulate collagen.
Because the threads hold tissue from beneath, the early period is about not working against them. The clinic asks you to limit two things for a time: large movements of the face, and pressure on it. Every item below is a version of one of those two. None of it is a test of discipline. It is simply easier to plan around a short list you know in advance than to discover it after you have booked the week.
The five things to postpone
1. Opening your mouth wide. This covers a dental check-up or treatment you booked before the trip, wide yawns, and food that needs a hard bite. ASPS lists difficulty opening the mouth, usually temporary, among the possible risks of a thread lift. Softer food that needs little chewing is the easy substitute.

2. Firm facial massage. Deep-pressure facial care, meridian-style massage or anything that presses and drags across the face should wait. The same applies at home: firm gua sha or kneading with your own hands counts as pressure too.
3. Sleeping face down. Lying on your front presses one side of the face into the pillow for hours. If you usually sleep that way, ask your doctor what position to use until the date you are given.
4. Saunas and steam rooms. This includes the jjimjilbang, the Korean bathhouse. If a jjimjilbang visit is already part of your Korea itinerary, save it for another trip.
5. Alcohol. Welcome-home dinners are the usual place this comes up. Telling friends in advance that you are not drinking for a while is easier than deciding at the table.

| What to postpone | What it includes | Why it is on the list | Until (date from your doctor) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening your mouth wide | Booked dental visits, wide yawns, hard food | Large facial movement | |
| Firm facial massage | Deep-pressure facials, meridian-style massage, firm gua sha | Pressure on the face | |
| Sleeping face down | Lying on your front for the night | Pressure on the face | |
| Saunas and steam rooms | Saunas, jjimjilbang | On the clinic's usual list. Ask your doctor about heat | |
| Alcohol | Dinners, celebrations | On the clinic's usual list. Ask your doctor about the period |
The last column is deliberately empty. Fill it in before you leave Seoul, while you are still at the clinic, because writing the dates down keeps them from blurring together once you are home. Consultations at Beauty Story are scheduled at one patient per hour, so there is time to go through the list line by line rather than at the door.
The dental exception
The dental item on the list means an appointment you booked in advance: a check-up, cleaning or planned treatment that can move by a few weeks without harm. Postpone that one until after the date your doctor gives you.
Urgent dental problems are different. If you have severe toothache, swelling in the gum or face, or anything else that needs prompt dental care, do not put it off because of the thread lift. Go to a dentist, tell them the date of your thread lift so they can take it into account, and let Beauty Story know as well. Delaying necessary dental treatment to protect the threads is not what the list is for.
What you may notice while it settles
Bruising, swelling and a feeling of tightness can follow a thread lift, and the skin may look slightly dented or sunken in places. Beauty Story's treatment information lists all four. They match what the published literature reports. A 2021 meta-analysis of 26 studies in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found swelling to be the most commonly reported complication, followed by skin dimpling, while infection and thread extrusion were each reported in around 2 percent of patients in the pooled estimates. A 2021 systematic review in Dermatologic Surgery found that most effects were transient and resolved on their own, with some exceptions, including contour irregularities, infections and inflammatory reactions.

The instinct with a dent or an uneven area is to press it or massage it smooth. Please do not. The clinic asks you not to press or massage these areas yourself. If something worries you, tell the clinic what you see and when it started, so the doctor can decide whether anything needs to be done.
It also helps to keep the timeline in mind. The face you see in the mirror in the first days is a settling face, not a final result, and it changes from day to day. Judging it too early is a frequent source of unnecessary worry after lifting treatments.
When not to wait for a reply
Messaging the clinic is the right step for most questions. It is not the right step for everything, because a reply can take time and some symptoms should not wait.

| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Bruising, swelling, tightness or a dent that worries you | Do not press or massage it. Tell the clinic what you see and when it started |
| Pain or swelling that keeps getting worse, or a fever | Do not wait for a messenger reply. Go to a medical facility near you, then let the clinic know |
| Severe toothache or dental swelling | See a dentist promptly. Tell them the date of your thread lift, and tell the clinic |
| A routine dental appointment that is already booked | Move it to after the date your doctor gave you |
The second row matters most. Infection is uncommon after a thread lift, but the 2021 systematic review above lists it among the effects that do not always settle on their own, and worsening pain, worsening swelling and fever are reasons to be seen in person. A doctor near you can examine you that day. A clinic in another country cannot.
Everyday care in the meantime
If you have swelling or bruising, use the medicine your doctor prescribed and the cold pack as instructed. ASPS also notes that cold compresses and medication are commonly used during early healing, and that your doctor will give you specific instructions for caring for your face. Follow those instructions over anything you read online, including this article.
When you go out, wear sunscreen. ASPS advises diligent sun protection until healing is complete.
If you are planning a laser or an energy-based lifting treatment later, such as ultrasound or radiofrequency, there needs to be a gap between it and the thread lift. Tell us the date of your thread lift before you book, and if you book the energy treatment somewhere else, tell that clinic too. The right gap depends on the threads used and the device, so it is set for you rather than taken from a general rule. How the two kinds of lifting differ, and when each is chosen, is covered in Thread lifting vs energy lifting: when to choose which.
Staying in touch after you fly home
Before you leave, it is worth settling a few things while you are still in the room with the doctor:

- What is the date for each item on the list? Write it in the table above.
- Which medicines should I take, and for how long?
- What would you want me to report, and how should I send it?
- Who do I contact if something changes, and in which language?
Once you are home, you can contact Beauty Story in Chinese as well as English. We will explain how to care for the area and whether you need to come back for a follow-up visit. If pain or swelling keeps getting worse, or you develop a fever, go to a medical facility near you first and contact us after.
Recovery, and how long you need to be careful, differ from person to person. Follow the examination and instructions of the doctor who treated you.
